Caller Id: Uncovering Its History And Advantages

By Larry J. Reaves

Like most services related to how we use our home telephones, Caller ID (or, CID) technology is largely taken for granted. Most of us have grown accustomed to screening our calls based on who is calling us. To be sure, there are several advantages to using the service that were not available to the public 30 years ago. Screening pranksters, telemarketers, or even acquaintances for whom we have little time can play a major role in maintaining our productivity.

Below, you’ll discover the surprising history of Caller ID technology; it did not originate in the U.S. We’ll also discuss the benefits of using the service to block unwanted calls and better manage your time.

History Of CID Technology

In Greece, a man named Theodore Paraskevakos started working on a design that would allow a caller’s phone number to be sent to the person who was being called. It was 1968 and by the following year, Paraskevakos had invented a workable model. Over the next seven years, he was awarded twenty patents from multiple countries related to his design.

In 1976, a Japanese man named Kazuo Hashimoto invented a device that could receive the identification signal that Paraskevakos’s invention sent. The following year, a Brazilian named Nlio Nicolai invented a prototype that would not only receive the signal, but could also display it. It wasn’t until 1984 that the first Caller ID service was tested within the U.S. By 1988, BellSouth became the first telecommunication company to offer the service to its customers.

Benefits Of Identifying A Caller Number

The primary advantage of CID technology is that it allows you to screen your calls as long as you own a telephone that can display the caller’s phone number. This is useful for a number of reasons. For example, many organizations call from systems that display “unknown” instead of a phone number. Telemarketers, political campaigns, and calls from charities are good examples. Despite what many people believe, listing your phone number on the Do Not Call List does not preclude your receiving these types of calls. The Do Not Call List only prohibits telemarketers from calling.

Another reason for using Caller ID is to filter harassing or prank calls. Even though it is possible for a caller to spoof their phone number, it is not a simple task. As a result, most people who make these types of calls are easily discouraged when you refuse to answer.

Caller identification is also an effective way to manage your time. If you’re busy doing something when a friend or loved one calls, you can note the caller’s information and call them back after you have finished what you’re doing.

The technology that lets us identify a caller prior to answering the phone is incredibly valuable, even if we take it for granted. Make sure your residential phone service provider offers the service. If it doesn’t, make sure your provider does not have a cancellation fee, should you choose to change providers so that you can have this helpful service in your home.
